Tuesday May 9, 2006 Stop Nagging The Motion Sensing!

As the time nears for me to catch a taxi to the airport and high-tale it to Los Angeles for E3, I have to take a moment to make a plea for everyone to stop nagging about “how old” or “how sucky” physical movement sensing in controllers is! In case you didn’t hear, the Playstation 3’s new controller uses motion sensing technology, just like the Nintendo Wii controller. I just read this post on Joystiq about the fact that motion sensing technology was originally introduced in PC peripherals a few years back and that it is “old technology.” In addition I argued with a friend after the Sony Press Conference about how “they aren’t the first to motion sensing technology” and I’ve begun to see this increasing dislike for this gyroscopic technology.

People just need to get over this and realize that the point is not necessarily that they are introducing this technology as completely new, but rather implementing and utilizing this technology in the next generation. The next generation is one where you are really getting immersed into games physically, beyond just pushing buttons. The Nintendo Wii and the Playstation 3 are examples of this and are paving the way. I think this is a fantastic opportunity and everyone with complains is not thinking hard enough, and maybe hasn’t had enough hands-on experience, to really look at this technology as the real next-step in gaming. Just get over all your gripes people and sit back and enjoy what is the future in gaming – not the technology, but the implementation and use of the technology. And when you can, get yourself some hands-on time with either the Sony Playstation 3 or the Nintendo Wii and play some games for yourself and give it a chance. Maybe you’re opinion will change into something for the better.
